Costa Calma

General details:

I'm afraid I know nothing about Costa Calma as I've never been there. I've driven past it plenty of times on the way to Sotavento, but never seen fit to stop there!

There's a huge amount of development happened here over the last several years, and what used to be a couple of houses dotted around has now become a full blown holiday resort catering for (at a rough guess) maybe 5000 - 6000 holiday-makers.

A number of UK tour companies locate guests here - including some on windsurfing holidays. Though it is possible to sail here (I know only 'cos I've seen windsurfers from the road), I believe most companies run their guests in buses to one or other of the René Egli rental centres further down the coast.

Here's an update gratefully received from Thomas Luijkx in The Netherlands - Dec '03 (Thanks Thomas):

yeah - good surf center - I could tell you everything you want to know, but here's their website http://www.fanatic-surf.com/. I even send them a picture I took from the 6th or 7th floor of Costa Calma palace, and it's on their "bilder der woche" somewhere (feb2003). Nice people, good equipment (bit slippery boards), not to expensive and repairing your sail only for 65 euros!

Directions to the right place:

Can't miss it really - heading S along the main road (FV-1?) from the airport; after about 30 mins/45km, the road becomes a palm-lined boulevard and a 50km/h speed limit. At the roundabout, turn L, signposted to Cañada del Rio (as opposed to turning R - also signposted to Cañada del Rio).

From here, you'll have to work out your own way to the beach 'cos I dont know.

How the winds work:

The wind here will be pretty much cross off (Northerly), gusty, and almost certainly less strong than by the René Egli Centre I.

Once again, I'm indebted to Thomas Luijkx for proving this update (May '04):

Wind is indeed most Northerly, but is not that gusty (not like the first 200 m in Costa Teguise Lanzarote which are hard to survive with less then 120 liters), perhaps only the first 50 m and is pretty constant from there on. Waves are not big then, not even 800 m offcoast, so good conditions when you don't get to surf every month.

When the wind comes from the east, you don't recognise it as costa "calma", pretty strong waves (even though the wind was not that strong) which are hard to get through when you haven't windsurfed for 6 months and the board is a bit slippery without shoes.

Hazards:

Normal stuff [for offshore conditions], but the Fantic Surf Center have binoculars and an inflatable boat with outboard motor to pick you up so don't panic...

Facilities:

Seemingly endless hotels and apartments. I'm sure there will be a reasonable complement of restaurants and bars.

Fanatic Windsurf Centre.

On the main road, just S of Costa Calma, is a petrol station, supermarket, bar/cafe & the Fuerte Action Surf shop - owned (unsurprisingly) by René Egli.

B&B's / campsites

No campsites, as far as I know, but accommodation-a-plenty as Costa Calma is now rapidly becoming a major tourist resort.

Pubs and eateries

One fairly easy place is the bar/buffet at the petrol pump just outside Costa Calma to the south, good burgers and excellent beer. Also small supermarket with brick-a-brack compexes.

Another restaurant (possibly the only one in the development) is the "Don Quijote" on the other side of the main road: you turn west at the main roundabout towards "Canadas los Rios" and about 150 metres or so you'll find the place. Not too bad, average prices.

Otherwise there is hardly anything in way of restaurants in Costa Calma apart from the many hotels, luxury or otherwise, wih their own facilities. But there is a furious amount of development going on at the time of writing (I have just come back 2 days ago) so watch this space!
