Hill Head

Back to location finder

General details:

On Southampton Water, Hill Head is SSW-facing into the Solent & looks almost directly across to Cowes.

I think there are 2 car parks/launch areas in Hill Head - or maybe the more easterly one (linked to in the directions section) is actually Lee-on-Solent? [If you could confirm this, I'd be most grateful - MF]. Whatever; the one I used is the one linked to below, & I saw that other windsurfers had launched from the more westerly car park.

I've only ever sailed here once - & that was on my way home from Brighton, Nov 1999 - slightly hung-over from the previous night! I seem to remember it being a bit cold & grey, with SW wind. Despite the wind direction, I don't remember there being any swell or waves to speak of, so I would guess this is normally a fairly flat-water venue.

The beach is shingle/pebbles & there isn't much of it. ie: You're always very close to the water's edge. There are groynes every 70m or so.

It was only a couple of hours after HW when I saw it, so I'm not sure how far the tide goes out.

How the winds work:

I'd guess anything from NW, through SW to ESE would work pretty well.
