Gower - Oxwich

Back to location finder

General details:

A stunningly beautiful location - wide, sweeping sandy bay, with fantastic views along the Gower coastline, clean sands and clear blue water.

Generally flat water but some waves further along the beach (walk down the beach to the left to get the waves past the headland) when there is a good swell running.

The water state (degree of flatness versus waves/ swell/ bumps) will depend on the strength of the wind, and tidal conditions

In a 30mph+ SE wind at high tide, the water state is most certainly not flat! There is considerable shore break, and mixed up waves/ swell which can make launching tricky for those not used to the conditions.  As the tide pulls out, the waves/lumps can still be sizable, but form (... maybe slightly) cleaner lines.

Tidal conditions:

HW springs tend to occur around 07:00 - 08:00 (19:00 - 20:00). HW neaps around 13:00 (GMT). Large tidal range: Spring low tides result in a VERY long walk to the water's edge.

Facilities:

Car park :
As at the summer of 2011, there is a car parking fee of £3.50, payable to a man at the barrier. This allows you to take your car right up to the top of the beach, enabling easy rigging.

The car park appears to shut from sometime around the beginning of November to around the  beginning of April.  This is a pain, as there is no entry through the barrier to the beach, and you will need to park in the small car park just off the road. There is a fair walk with kit to the beach front - not impossible if you are desperate for a sail, but also not ideal, particularly if you want easy access to your vehicle, or need to change kit.

Loos, cafe, which are open from around April to the end of October - and appear to close when the carpark closes for the winter months.
