Phil, I've not got much to add but whichever one you go for it's worth considering fitting a nose protector (to the board) to help you through the catapult phase while you get used to getting planing and into the straps. :)

not the cheapest option I am afraid but a very pleasant and effective way of checking out the kit is to go on a windsurfing holiday
e.g. neilson, club thingy etc

warm weather and plenty of different boards and sails to try

That is what I did and also asked for advice from the Nomads
Unfortunatlely I have now got hooked on the holiday which was not the original intention but it did give me the opportunity to try out the toys

Like the sound of that dro.
Sadly my domestic life is strictly Buildings maintenance and grounds, my wife deals with the accounts (if I'm honest everything else really).

Have you any idea how difficult it is explaining that Wind Surfers World really is a DIY shop and how usefull the water based tool will be.
I'm on a back foot already.

Matt, hadn't given that much thought until now.
There are some interesting posts on this forum and others, ranging from lumps of foam taped to the board to some odd looking device called Jez's Knob.
In the Starboard catalogue they show a "HD mast impact protector" anyone ever tried one?

Jez knobs have a mixed press, as they put pressure on the mast/track, although I'm sure they saved me a few dings to my board nose, unlike when I didn't use it and had to rebuild the nose. I've got one I should really sell if your interested.

As for nose protectors. If you get a new board these can be very expensive, but you will be heartbroken if you break it. Or for an older board as I did with Cyrno the Techno, a £6 swimming sausage cut in half and shaped stuck round the nose worked very well, and had a lot more protection that the official slimline versions. Its not very pretty (hence the name) but it was almost techno blue.

Well, well - not seen a Bic Star for donkeys years. Must be at least 30 years old. Not seen much use, either?

I knew it, Vintage.

If there are any curators of wealthy museums tuned into the forum I'm happy to discuss offers, bids from private collectors will also be considered.

I have the original mast, boom and 1 sail, unfortunately the neighours dog took a shine to the mast foot and it would now make a fine exhibit in the Tate modern.

Very unfortunate indeed - to the extent that it probably makes the board unusable as a windsurf board, I'm afraid.

Those mast feet were pretty proprietary - it's a rubber coated friction peg, that inserts into one of the two holes (mast steps) in the board. Turning the mast foot tightens down a collet inside the rubber sleeve which then expands to give the friction fit in the mast step. Usually, it would last about 5 mins before the whole mast pulled out of the board.

Wayler had a very similar (but different) system.

I'd cut down the mast, stick a paddle on the end of the top half & try to sell it as an über-weight SUP!

Dro, grip advice taken.

I set of on a quest for my inner man and found him cowering in one of the post christmas wobbly bits.

Good news, he is the groveling maestro, better than that groveling really works. I am now the proud owner of a shiny, sunny foreign holiday brochure.

Well done

Lady Timid and I are booked for Ortakent May14 for 2/52

I try and give the Nomads plenty of notice so that thay can avoid me

Very embarrasing if they end up the same week. Having to live in my shadow for a period of time destroys most egos.

Matt did it once and have you seen the clothes he now wears while ducking and jybing .
Not only that but he puts a picture of it on the site!!!!

Good progress on floating toy front.

Now the proud owner of a nimble 144 Carve.
I managed to put it on the roof of the car without a Forklift truck.

No more dragging the sailing barge to the waters edge.
Just need to pluck up enough courage to sail it now.

Next, I shall sniff out a sailing rig.

Given some advice on which sails to buy, noted on the back of an envelope.
Went to Windy World and forgot the envelope.
Not to worry, decided to guess.
The 1 reasonable sail that I have which I thought was a 6.5 turned out to be a 5.5.
Bought the following:
1 x 6.5m Tush. T4.
1 x 7.5m Tush. T4.
1 x 45% carbon mast (it's a kit, comes in two parts).
1 x weight lifting belt with a metal hook at the front.
1 x Board bag.
1 x Mast foot.
1 x Mast Extension.
1 x uphaul.
The neighbours dog is really excited about it all. When I put one of the sails up in the garden he was shouting his appreciation and repeatedly throwing himself against the fence. Maybe he has spotted the new mast foot.

Envelopes are over-rated.
