Insurance ??

Post by Tired tim »

I guess that this is a two part question.

a) I've noticed that a few places, mainly lakes etc. require a windsurfer to have insurance. I'm guessing that this is the third party kind. If so, where do folks get this from and is it worth it?

b) Do folks have insurance against stuff getting knicked? Any recommends?

c) If I take out 'b', does it usually include 'a'? :???:

Insurance

I joined RYA last year for 3rd party cover.
My home insurance, my broker assures me, covers theft from vehicle when away from home.
Might be worth checking your home insurance in case you're duplicating cover.
As for 3rd party, there's loads available in backs of Boards mag. Most of them also allow you to add equipment cover - at a cost!
Hope this helps.

I think Viking are one of the cheapest, certain that I found when I started and they claim to be Windsurfing specialists. 3rd.Party is a must at many venues.

A word of warning is that Fully comp Insurance will expect kit (including boards) locked in or to the car. Not always easy if the boards on the roof rack.

I'm not sure I'd trust my house insurance as I can never get a clear or written answer to such clarification questions and the policy is ambiguous over exactly what is covered when you are away from the house.

I agree that third party is a must

But as for fully comp. just buy cheap second hand crap.

Also gives a very good excuse when performong badly

As the old proverb states "a wet windsurfer always blames his/her tools"

Noticed Tiredtim's entry re ability and felt he might be a potential member of the Timids
I could send him a membership form if I had one
He could then recieve a handbook ,badge and discount vouchers if they existed
Attendance at regular trips would be mandatory if organised
Wind testing clinics would also be popular if I could find the deck chair
And finally attendance at the high point of the year the virtual Xmas party/annual meeting would be a must.

Ahhhhhh IF ONLY !!!

Yours very dry warm and comfortable

Sounds like a really good idea; if only I could be bothered!

Should be out at Poole this weekend. If you see me, stay away (no 3rd party yet)!

Dear Mr Poole Windsurfing,

Thanks for your inquiry ,Timid membership form on the way (might take 3 years to arrive)

I hope you have taken my advice and made a point of buying cheap equipment from private sellers.

Neroli and I gave up with insuring our kit a long time ago because we found that once you have multiple boards and sails it becomes uneconomic unless all your kit is recent and consequently valuable - in order to have your sail insured it had to be in use with a board that was also insured. In our case we had recent, valuable sails but most of our boards were worth less than the excess, however in order to insure the sails we had to insure boards that weren't worth insuring.

We have been RYA members for as long as I can remember and have benefited from the insurance. I have had one claim made against me a long time ago, & the insurance company paid up promptly.
If found, please return to the pub.
