Ok Nigel asked a while back about Machen area , so here a route along that way , it takes in a fair chunk of the rhymney valley ridgeway and returns on some of the sirohy cycle track . pic is memory map never used it to send route so sorry for image ! but all the route are where they should be
implanted in me head !!

ok aint going to do much write up as pics worth a thousand words , pics are taken as fair up trail as poss then from that point on , etc.
start/finish at pub. about 1 mile lane up past golf couse and onto ridgeway .

this bottom section used to be a fave on mx bike but council have recenty filled all the bomb holes in which has spoiled it as the holes where about 1ft deep big pools of water to fly thu .

exit onto a lane for 200yrds then back though the woods right down to bottom onto cycle way , exiting by carp park on sir valley walk , you passs the sign on round about as you go cwmcarn !

ran out memory card but nearly back onto road back to pub .
its quite an easy route , but there loads more variants you can take if you wanted some thing harder , there are some quite steep and technical drops down though the woods , also the ridgeway carries a lot farther than ii cut off it you can ride rifgt down to back end of risca or other valley ,
i,ll do some more in week if I get chance maybe the harder bits .

I was told there was a slate quarry with a very narrow trail and I assume, a steep fall to one side. Is this misinformation?

not shure about a old slate quarry ! its mainly all old tram lines from levels for coal .
Theres like a rabbit warren of trails shooting off everywhere all along the ridgeway.
The ridgeway is a B.O.A.T. hence the problems I mentioned earlier about motocyles
